Formations & Maneuvers
Basic fighter pilot concepts adapted for Metalstorm. Practice in custom matches. Energy and situational awareness matter more than any single maneuver.
Basic formations
- Line abreast: Wingmen side-by-side. Good for mutual support and scanning. Keeps you from bunching up.
- Trail / line astern: One behind the other. Useful for following a leader into a merge or covering a rearm run.
- Fluid four / loose deuce: Two pairs. One pair engages, the other supports or covers. Harder to coordinate but effective with voice.
Core maneuvers
- One-circle fight: Both jets turn the same direction. Favors the jet with the tighter turn radius (often lights or delta-wings). Stay near ideal turn speed.
- Two-circle fight: Jets turn opposite directions. Favors the jet with better turn rate or energy. Can turn into a rate fight.
- Vertical maneuver: Add altitude to the turn. Breaks predictable horizontal flight and can force an overshoot.
- Break turn: Hard turn toward the threat to force a miss or overshoot. Combine with a flare if a missile is inbound.
- Notch: Turn perpendicular to a radar missile to break the lock or reduce its effectiveness. Works better with some jets than others.
- Extend / disengage: Afterburner away to create distance, rearm, or reset. Do not extend into more enemies.
Evasive tips
- Change both direction and speed when flaring. Pure straight-line flares are easy to defeat.
- Watch the minimap. If you are alone against multiple contacts, disengage early.
- Use terrain on maps that have it. Ground clutter and hills break line of sight and some missile tracking.
- Do not get target-fixated. A second enemy is usually the one that kills you.
Team play notes
- Call the target or the threat if you are using voice.
- Support a wingman who is already engaged instead of starting a new fight.
- In Air Superiority, prioritize uncaptured points with fewer enemies over pure kills.
